Lenovo ThinkPad T480 Trade-In Value in Pakistan (2026)
The ThinkPad T480 is arguably the most upgradeable and repair-friendly business laptop of the last decade, and that is why it still has a real market in Pakistan in 2026. It takes 32GB DDR4 (max 64GB with unofficial modules), two SSDs (M.2 NVMe + 2.5-inch SATA), a swappable rear battery, and a socketed WWAN slot. Students on tight budgets, sysadmins who want a Linux daily driver, and Ubuntu tinkerers keep demand steady even now that the machine is 8 years old.
Trade-in on a T480 is not really about the year, it is about which 8th-gen Core it has (i5-8250U vs i5-8350U vs i7-8650U), whether the rear battery holds charge, whether the touchscreen version (T480s does not have this, note) is intact, and BIOS/supervisor password status. A supervisor-password-locked ThinkPad has almost no resale value in Pakistan because clearing it requires board-level chip work.
Historical price anchor
New in 2018 the T480 shipped at Rs. 180,000-240,000 depending on config. Refurbished imports peaked around Rs. 95,000-120,000 in 2022.
Current 2026 trade-in ranges by config & grade
| Configuration | Grade A | Grade B | Grade C |
|---|---|---|---|
i5-8250U / 8GB / 256GB SSD / HD screen Baseline config. Grade A needs both batteries holding 70%+, no dents, working backlight. | Rs. 55,000-65,000 | Rs. 42,000-52,000 | Rs. 32,000-40,000 |
i5-8350U or i7-8650U / 8GB / 256GB SSD / FHD IPS FHD IPS screen adds Rs. 5,000-7,000 alone, buyers know the HD panel is unusable in 2026. | Rs. 62,000-72,000 | Rs. 48,000-58,000 | Rs. 36,000-45,000 |
i5 or i7 / 16GB / 512GB NVMe / FHD IPS Most-common upgraded config on Pakistani market. Sells within 10-14 days when clean. | Rs. 68,000-75,000 | Rs. 52,000-62,000 | Rs. 40,000-50,000 |
i7-8650U / 16GB or 32GB / 512GB-1TB NVMe / FHD IPS + touch Top spec caps at ~78k because the platform is 2018-era regardless. Do not expect Rs. 90k+ offers in 2026. | Rs. 70,000-78,000 | Rs. 55,000-65,000 | Rs. 42,000-52,000 |
What actually drives your price
BIOS supervisor / power-on password
CRITICAL discount factor. A supervisor-password-locked ThinkPad cannot be reset by removing the CMOS battery on T-series, it requires desoldering the security chip. If you don't know or don't have the password, the unit drops from Grade A to Rs. 18,000-25,000 (parts value). Bring the password written down or clear it in BIOS before selling.
Dual battery health (internal + rear swappable)
T480 has two batteries, internal (24Wh) and external swappable (24, 48, or 72Wh). Both need to hold 70%+ for Grade A. A dead rear battery = Rs. 6,000-9,000 off (or Rs. 8,000-12,000 replacement). A dead internal = Rs. 8,000-12,000 off.
Screen type and condition
1366x768 HD panel = capped at Grade B pricing regardless of condition, it is basically unusable in 2026. FHD IPS = full range. FHD IPS + touch = +Rs. 3,000-5,000. Cracked or dead panel = Rs. 8,000-12,000 for replacement, deducted.
Keyboard and trackpoint condition
The T480 keyboard is one of ThinkPad's best and buyers care. Missing keycap or spilled-liquid damage = Rs. 4,000-6,000 keyboard swap deducted. Broken trackpoint = -Rs. 2,000.
Chassis condition (magnesium frame)
Corner dents, cracked lid corners near the hinges, or a loose hinge screw = -8-12%. Bottom cover scratches don't affect much because these are workhorse machines.
Ports (USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, SD, dock connector)
T480 has 6 ports plus the ThinkPad dock connector on the bottom. Any dead USB-A port = -Rs. 2,500-4,000. Dead USB-C = -Rs. 5,000-8,000 (also affects charging).
Fingerprint reader and camera
Working fingerprint reader = +Rs. 1,500-3,000 vs a dead one. Working camera with privacy shutter = expected, dead camera = -Rs. 2,000-3,000.
Original 65W USB-C charger and dock
Original Lenovo charger = +Rs. 2,000-3,000. Original ThinkPad Basic/Pro dock = +Rs. 8,000-15,000 depending on model.
How to prepare before selling
- Boot into BIOS (F1 at Lenovo splash) and clear any supervisor password. If you don't know it, admit that on WhatsApp before coming, we will quote parts-value instead of wasting your time.
- Wipe the drives via Windows Settings > Recovery > Reset this PC > Remove Everything (Clean drive). Or boot a Linux USB and secure-erase.
- Check both batteries in Lenovo Vantage > Hardware Settings > Power, screenshot the wear percentage of each.
- Test all ports (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, SD card slot, headphone) and note any that don't work.
- Wipe the chassis, keyboard, and screen. Blow dust out of the fan vent on the left side.
- Find the original 65W USB-C charger and, if you have it, the retail box.
- Update BIOS to the latest version from Lenovo Support before selling, it is a real Rs. 1,500-3,000 selling point.
How this model compares to newer versions
The T480 is two full generations behind current ThinkPad T14 Gen 4/5. It runs Windows 11 unofficially (needs the bypass) which limits its resale ceiling. The T14 Gen 1-2 is roughly 30-40% faster with better battery and official Windows 11 support, so most sellers moving from T480 to T14 recover 30-40% of what they paid.
FAQ
Can you unlock a T480 with a forgotten BIOS supervisor password?
Not in a way that keeps resale value. The security chip on T-series requires desoldering and reflashing, cost is Rs. 8,000-12,000 and the unit is then considered tampered with. We buy locked units at parts-value only (Rs. 18,000-25,000).
Does upgrading the RAM to 32GB before selling get me more money?
Marginally. 32GB DDR4 sticks cost Rs. 6,000-8,000 in Hafeez Center, and it adds maybe Rs. 4,000-5,000 to the offer. Not worth it unless you already have the RAM.
My HD (1366x768) screen still works, is there any market?
Very limited. We can swap the panel for an FHD IPS for Rs. 6,000-8,000 in-house and pay you the FHD price minus the swap cost. Usually better than selling as-is.
I have the ThinkPad Pro Dock (40AH), does it add value?
Yes, Rs. 8,000-15,000 depending on model and condition (40AH Ultra Dock is at the top). Bring it with power adapter if you have it.
Can I trade in against a T14 or X1 Carbon from your shop?
Yes, full trade-in value applied as store credit against any T-series, X-series, or business laptop we sell.
How long is the process at your shop?
30-45 minutes: BIOS/password check (5 min), battery test (10 min), full port and hardware test (15 min), agree, cash. WhatsApp photos + BIOS status + battery report to 0314 4000131 for a pre-quote.
