Laptop Motherboard Repair in Lahore - Chip-Level Bench Work

Motherboard failures are the single most common serious fault we see on Pakistan business laptops past the 4-year mark. The drivers are boring but consistent: sustained heat because the fans were never cleaned, mains surges from load-shedding and UPS switchover, and undisclosed liquid spills that the customer forgot about six months ago. The laptops that end up on our bench are usually 3-6 years old, belong to accountants, lawyers, developers, and small business owners, and hold work that matters more than the machine itself.

We will be honest about the repair-versus-replace math before we open anything. A motherboard repair generally makes sense when the laptop is under 7 years old AND the repair estimate is under about 40 percent of a comparable used replacement in the current Hafeez Center market. If either condition fails, we tell you and often quote you a used donor unit instead. We would rather send you home with a working laptop than a repaired board in a machine that is about to fail somewhere else.

Symptoms this service covers

  • Laptop will not power on at all - no LEDs, no fan spin
  • Powers on but no display, no BIOS post, sometimes fans spin then stop
  • Random shutdowns after 5-30 minutes of use (thermal or VRM failure)
  • Blue screen or kernel panic during boot, then reboots
  • No charging even after confirmed-good charger and new battery
  • One side of USB ports completely dead while other side works
  • Keyboard and trackpad dead but external USB keyboard works
  • Continuous reboot loop before or during BIOS logo
  • Battery not detected in Windows or shows 0 percent plugged in
  • Only powers on with charger plugged in, dies instantly on battery

How we diagnose it

We start with a visual and LED-code inspection to read what the power-sequence controller is already telling us. Then a multimeter check across the critical rails - 19V input, 5V standby, 3.3V ALW, and the CPU VCC around 1.05V - to find where the sequence stops. For shorted-component identification we use freeze-spray or a thermal camera to spot the part heating up when it should not. Finally we cross-reference the specific model schematic and boardview on Ionova, UTLite, or BoardviewInfo before we touch a soldering iron.

Diagnostic and quote

Free

Timeframe: Same day (30-60 minutes)

You pay nothing to know what is wrong. Fixed-price quote before we open the board.

Common power-section fixes (charging IC, mosfet, capacitor)

Rs. 4,500-9,000

Timeframe: 1-2 days

Component-level replacement. Bench work at our shop, not sent out.

BGA reball or reflow (GPU chip)

Rs. 8,000-16,000

Timeframe: 2-3 days

For MacBook Pro Nvidia-era failures, some HP dv-series, older gaming laptops. Not a permanent fix on every model - we will be honest about expected longevity before starting.

Full donor motherboard swap

Rs. 25,000-90,000+

Timeframe: 3-7 days

Depends heavily on model availability in the local parts market. Sometimes cheaper than component repair, sometimes twice the price. We will tell you which makes sense.

Southbridge or EC chip replacement

Rs. 12,000-22,000

Timeframe: 2-4 days

Advanced BGA work. Only makes economic sense on higher-value laptops - X1 Carbon, MacBook Pro, XPS, ZBook.

Honest success expectations

Component-level repair success rate at our bench is roughly 80-85 percent for boards with no liquid history. For water-damaged boards it drops to 40-55 percent depending on how quickly the laptop was brought in and whether it was powered on with moisture still inside - that single decision usually determines the outcome. Reballed GPU chips from the 2010-2015 MacBook Pro Nvidia era and similar HP models have a real chance of failing again in 6-18 months, so we price accordingly and tell you upfront rather than sell the repair as permanent.

What we cannot fix

  • × Micro-BGA CPU replacement on Apple M1, M2, M3 MacBooks and most modern Intel ultrabooks - the CPU is soldered and cannot be economically desoldered or replaced
  • × Fully burned or carbonized boards where multiple traces and layers are gone
  • × Boards with lifted pads or missing traces from botched previous repair attempts by another shop
  • × Apple T2 and M-series security chip failures that require Apple internal reprogramming tools
  • × Boards where the fault requires an OEM-only key or NVRAM reprogramming we do not have access to (some Lenovo ThinkPad ME region locks, some Dell service-mode boards)

Warranty on the repair

We give a written 30-day workmanship warranty on the specific repair we performed. If the same fault returns within 30 days we re-repair it free or refund the labour and part, your choice. The warranty does not cover new unrelated faults elsewhere in the laptop, and it does not extend to the rest of the machine. Terms are printed on your invoice - no verbal-only promises.

How to start

Send a short video of the fault to WhatsApp 0314 4000131 along with your laptop model number and how long it has been happening. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth bringing in before you spend on courier or petrol. Lahore walk-ins can visit Shop 66A Hafeez Center any time between 10 AM and 10 PM Monday to Saturday. Nationwide customers can send via TCS or Leopards - if we quote and you decline, you only pay one-way courier; if we repair, return courier is on us.

FAQ

How long does the free diagnostic actually take?

Usually 30-60 minutes on the bench if you drop it in during shop hours. Complex intermittent faults sometimes need overnight thermal soak testing - we tell you that upfront and never charge for it.

Do you charge me anything if I decide not to proceed with the repair?

No. Diagnostic is free, quote is free, and if you take the laptop back untouched there is no bench fee. This is unusual in Lahore - most shops charge Rs. 500-1500 diagnostic - but we would rather build the reputation.

Will a chip-level repair last as long as a new motherboard?

On power-section repairs (charging IC, capacitors, mosfets) - yes, typically for the remaining life of the laptop. On BGA reballs of failure-prone GPU chips - honestly no, they can fail again in 6-18 months, and we price and warranty accordingly.

Can you retrieve data from a laptop with a dead motherboard?

Yes - if the drive itself is healthy we pull the SSD or HDD and clone your data to your USB drive or an external. Data-only recovery from a dead board is Rs. 2,500-4,000. See our data recovery page for drive-level failures.

Is chip-level repair actually better than just replacing the whole motherboard?

It depends. If the fault is a single failed component (capacitor, charging IC) chip-level is cheaper, faster, and does not risk introducing a new used board of unknown history. If the board has multi-point failure or is water-damaged across regions, a donor swap is usually the honest answer.

Do you fix MacBook M1 or M2 logic boards?

Only peripheral faults - display cable connectors, port connectors, some passive components. The CPU/RAM/SSD are unified on the SoC and cannot be replaced. If the SoC itself is dead the honest answer is board swap from a donor, which on Apple Silicon MacBooks is expensive enough that replacement usually wins.
