Laptop Keyboard Replacement in Lahore - Chai-Spill or Dead-Key Fix

Two things kill laptop keyboards in Lahore: hot chai and years of typing. We see about equal numbers of each. Spills are dramatic - user knows exactly what happened, one or two keys go dead first, then more, then within a week the keyboard is a paperweight because sugar has crystallized under every membrane. Wear-out is slow - the space bar and E and A keys start double-tapping or missing strokes, and users adapt for months before it becomes unlivable.

The repair-versus-replace math depends entirely on the chassis. On most Dell, HP, and Lenovo business laptops the keyboard is a separate module held by clips or a few screws, and replacement is straightforward and cheap. On many ultrabooks and MacBooks the keyboard is riveted to the top-case, and replacement means changing the whole top-case - a much bigger job. We check your specific model and tell you honestly which category it falls into before you commit.

Symptoms this service covers

  • One or several keys not responding at all
  • Keys typing wrong characters (Q types 1, etc)
  • Sticky keys after a spill (tea, coffee, water, juice)
  • Double-typing or missed-typing on worn keys
  • Whole keyboard dead but external USB keyboard works
  • Backlight failed on backlit keyboard (backlight-only failure)
  • Keys physically missing or popped off (rescue vs. replace)
  • Trackpad interfering or dead alongside keyboard fault (top-case issue)

How we diagnose it

We test the keyboard in BIOS first to confirm the fault exists outside Windows (rules out driver and software issues). On spill cases we open the laptop and inspect the membrane and PCB tracks under a magnifier for corrosion - sometimes an early spill can be cleaned and dried rather than replaced. If replacement is needed we identify the exact part variant (US vs UK layout, backlit vs non-backlit, pointing-stick model on ThinkPads) and confirm the fit before ordering.

Real cost + timeline

Standard clip-in keyboards (older Dell Inspiron, HP 15, Lenovo IdeaPad)

Rs. 4,000-7,500

Timeframe: Same day

Simple swap - keyboard lifts out with clips or a few screws. Half-hour fitting.

Business laptop keyboards (Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad)

Rs. 6,500-11,000

Timeframe: Same day to 2 days

Slightly more involved fit, sometimes requires palmrest removal. Backlit versions cost more.

Top-case with integrated keyboard (ultrabooks, XPS, Spectre, HP Elite x2)

Rs. 9,500-16,000

Timeframe: 1-3 days

Whole top-case swap because keyboard is riveted in. Fitting is a longer bench job.

MacBook top-case with keyboard and battery (2016-2019 butterfly-era)

Rs. 22,000-38,000

Timeframe: 2-4 days

Apple bundles keyboard, battery, and top-case as one part on butterfly-keyboard models. Expensive but the only fix.

Post-spill clean and salvage (no replacement)

Rs. 2,500-4,500

Timeframe: Same day

Only viable within 24-48 hours of spill and only for water spills - sugar drinks almost always need replacement.

Individual keycap replacement (popped off, cap intact)

Rs. 300-1,500 per key

Timeframe: Same day

Depends on availability of loose keycaps for the specific model.

Honest success expectations

Straight replacement is essentially 100 percent successful when the correct part is fitted. Post-spill salvage without replacement is realistically 50-60 percent successful - the outcome depends heavily on what was spilled (water good, sugar drinks bad, oily food impossible) and how fast the laptop was powered off. We are honest about salvage odds before you pay for the attempt.

What we cannot fix

  • × Sugar-drink spills more than 48 hours old - the sugar crystallizes under every membrane and cleaning is not economically viable versus replacement
  • × Keyboards where the connector cable or the motherboard keyboard controller is damaged (this needs board-level work, not a keyboard swap)
  • × Adding backlight to a non-backlit keyboard - the wiring and BIOS support is not present, cannot be retrofitted
  • × Changing keyboard layout on top-case-integrated models to a layout not offered by the manufacturer (no US-to-Arabic on a MacBook, for example)

Warranty on the repair

30-day warranty on replacement work - key failure, dead-key resurrection, or fitting-related issues covered. Spills after fitting are not covered (obvious, but worth stating). Individual keycap replacements have no warranty because the caps themselves are subject to normal use.

How to start

WhatsApp 0314 4000131 with a photo of the affected keys and your laptop model. Walk-in Shop 66A Hafeez Center any time 10 AM-10 PM Mon-Sat. If you have just spilled something, unplug and power off immediately (hold power button 10 seconds) and bring it in - the faster we see it the better the salvage odds.

FAQ

I just spilled chai - what do I do right now?

Power off immediately - hold the power button 10 seconds. Do not turn back on. Do not press keys to test. Unplug charger, remove battery if removable. Tilt laptop upside down, put on a towel. Bring in as soon as possible - the difference between 2 hours and 2 days is often the difference between salvage and replace.

Is it worth trying to save the keyboard or should I just replace?

Depends on the liquid. Plain water within 24 hours - salvage is worth Rs. 2,500-4,500 attempt. Sugar drinks (chai, coke, juice) - honestly, replacement is usually the right answer unless we catch it in the first hour.

Can you just replace the specific dead key rather than the whole keyboard?

If the keycap physically popped off and the scissor mechanism underneath is intact - yes, we can re-seat or replace the cap. If the electrical switch under the key is dead, no - the membrane is one continuous sheet, we cannot swap one switch.

How long does keyboard replacement take?

Simple clip-in: 30-60 minutes. Business laptop with palmrest: 1-2 hours. Ultrabook top-case swap: 2-4 hours. MacBook top-case: half a day or overnight because of adhesive work.

Will my keyboard layout stay the same or will it change?

We match your existing layout (US or UK, backlit or non-backlit). If you want to switch layouts we can quote it - we sometimes have both variants for common models.

Why is MacBook keyboard replacement so much more expensive?

On 2016-2019 MacBooks the keyboard is riveted to the top-case which also contains the battery and trackpad. Apple sells it as one part. We are not marking it up - the part itself is expensive because of how Apple designed it.
