Signs you need a new one
- The keyboard works only some of the time, often when you press on the palm-rest.
- A group of keys in one column or row is dead.
- The laptop shows keyboard not found or beeps during start.
- Backlight flickers or stays off while keys still work.
- The ribbon shows creases, torn edges or dark burn marks near the connector.
How to get the right fit
- Count the pins or contacts on the old ribbon and check the listing matches.
- Measure the width and total length of the ribbon, in millimetres.
- Note whether the contacts face up or down at the motherboard end.
- Check if the ribbon also serves the backlight or if there is a separate one.
Common questions
Will a new ribbon fix a keyboard that types wrong letters?
Only if the ribbon is damaged. If the keys themselves are worn or wet, the keyboard needs replacing instead.
The ribbon looks fine. Can it still be faulty?
Yes. Worn contacts or hidden cracks are hard to see. A different ribbon or keyboard test is the sure way to check.
Why does my ribbon not fit even though it looks the same?
Pin count and contact side matter more than length. A ribbon with one pin more or less will not work.
