Why Is My Laptop Trackpad Not Working? (Pakistan Fix Guide)

Trackpad issues fall into three types: completely unresponsive, cursor jumps randomly, or clicks do not register. Each has different causes. The most common cause across all types is accidentally disabling the trackpad with a function key, followed by dirt buildup, followed by driver or setting issues. Genuine trackpad hardware failure is rare and usually a Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 8,000 fix.

Before spending any money, always try the free checks below. A USB mouse used temporarily lets you troubleshoot without frustration. If a USB mouse works perfectly but the trackpad still fails after all software checks, then hardware repair is warranted.

Quick answer

First, check if you accidentally pressed Fn plus F5, F7, or F9 (varies by laptop), these toggle the trackpad on and off. Some laptops have a small LED on the trackpad itself that lights up when disabled. Second, try Windows Settings, Bluetooth and Devices, Touchpad, and make sure the toggle is on. If those do not help, try a USB mouse to confirm the OS is fine, then reinstall the trackpad driver via Device Manager.

Reasons in order of likelihood

  1. 1

Trackpad accidentally disabled with function key

Every laptop has a keyboard shortcut like Fn+F5, Fn+F7, or Fn+F9 that toggles the trackpad on/off. It is easy to press by accident while typing, especially on Dell, HP, and Lenovo laptops. Some show a small LED on the trackpad corner when disabled.

Fix: Look at your F-row keys for a trackpad icon (looks like a rectangle with a diagonal line). Press Fn plus that key. Also check the small light on the trackpad, tap it firmly (some laptops have a soft tap area to re-enable). Fixes 40 percent of trackpad-dead cases in seconds.
  2. 2

Dirt, oil, or moisture on the trackpad surface

Trackpads are capacitive, they detect the electrical field of your finger. Oil, sweat, food residue, or moisture (wet hands after wudhu, tea splashes) confuses the sensor. Cursor jumps, ghost clicks, or unresponsiveness follows.

Fix: Turn off the laptop, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth with a drop of dish soap, wipe the trackpad and surrounding palmrest thoroughly. Dry completely before restarting. If problem returns, wash your hands before use, oil buildup returns quickly.
  3. 3

    Trackpad driver corrupted or missing

Common after Windows Update replaces the manufacturer-specific driver (Synaptics, ELAN, Precision) with a generic one. You lose features like two-finger scroll, three-finger swipe, and sometimes clicks stop working entirely.

Fix: Open Device Manager, expand Mice and Other pointing devices, right-click the trackpad, choose Uninstall device. Restart, Windows reinstalls. If features still missing, download proper driver from Dell/HP/Lenovo support site for your exact model.
  4. 4

Trackpad settings misconfigured (sensitivity, palm rejection)

Windows Settings has adjustable sensitivity and palm rejection. If sensitivity is too low, taps do not register. If palm rejection is too aggressive, edge clicks fail. Common source of complaints after a Windows feature update resets these.

Fix: Open Settings, Bluetooth and Devices, Touchpad. Adjust Sensitivity to Medium or High. Turn on Taps and adjust the Taps section. Test after each change. On Precision Touchpad-equipped laptops, there are more granular controls.
  5. 5

Trackpad ribbon cable loose (after a repair or drop)

If the laptop was recently opened for keyboard, battery, or hinge work, the trackpad ribbon can come loose. Also happens after a drop that flexes the palmrest. Symptoms: trackpad and its buttons both completely dead, USB mouse works fine.

Fix: Requires opening the laptop. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500 at NN Laptops to reseat. If the problem started right after another shop's repair, they should fix it under their warranty.
  6. 6

Failed trackpad hardware (physical damage or wear)

Rare but happens after 5+ years of daily use or after physical impact. Symptoms: no response to touch or clicks even after all software fixes and USB mouse works fine. Some laptops develop a stuck-down click button.

Fix: Trackpad replacement at NN Laptops runs Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 8,000 depending on model. On some laptops the trackpad is part of the palmrest and the whole assembly must be replaced (higher cost). We check availability by model, WhatsApp us.
  7. 7

Conflict with external mouse or Bluetooth device

Some Windows settings automatically disable the trackpad when a USB or Bluetooth mouse is connected. If you plugged in a mouse and later trackpad seems dead even without the mouse, the setting may need to be turned off.

Fix: Open Settings, Bluetooth and Devices, Touchpad, and uncheck Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected (or ensure it is checked, depending on your preference). Also unplug and unpair any wireless mice you no longer use.

When to worry

If the trackpad becomes physically warm, if you see visible cracks or the surface has been dented, or if the palmrest has been damaged in a drop, hardware repair is likely needed. Also if the trackpad and keyboard both went dead at the same time after a spill, that is a serious issue, bring it in same-day.

When to relax

Occasional stuttering during long browser scrolling, cursor briefly not tracking after wake from sleep, and slightly reduced sensitivity in cold weather are all normal quirks. Not every quirk needs a repair.

If it needs a repair — what it costs

Free at NN Laptops: driver reinstall, function key check, settings tune. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500: ribbon cable reseat. Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 8,000: full trackpad replacement (varies by model, MacBook and Surface are higher). Rs. 800 to Rs. 3,000: USB mouse as temporary or permanent alternative.

FAQ

Can I use my laptop with just a USB mouse forever?

Yes, no problem. Many users prefer a mouse over the trackpad anyway. If the trackpad is dead and repair is expensive, a Rs. 1,200 wireless mouse is a fine long-term solution.

Why does my trackpad work sometimes and not others?

Usually a loose ribbon cable, a heat-related driver issue, or moisture on the surface. Intermittent problems are worth diagnosing before they become permanent failures.

My trackpad clicks work but taps do not, why?

Taps are disabled in Windows settings. Go to Settings, Bluetooth and Devices, Touchpad, and enable Taps. You can also set tap sensitivity to Medium or High.

How do I clean my trackpad without damaging it?

Turn laptop off first. Use a microfiber cloth slightly damp with water and a tiny drop of dish soap. Never spray liquid directly. Dry with a clean cloth. Isopropyl alcohol wipes work too, but avoid strong solvents.

Does NN Laptops stock trackpads for older models?

Yes for most ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, and popular consumer models. Rarer models like Acer Aspire from 2015 or old Sony Vaios may need ordering. WhatsApp us your exact model for availability.
