What this part does
This is the cable or small board that links the hard drive or SSD to the motherboard. On many laptops it is a flat ribbon with a plug on each end. Some models place the drive on a small daughter board instead.

- The drive appears and disappears at random.
- Very slow reads or frequent freezes that go away after reseating the drive.
- The connector pins are bent, burnt or the plastic is cracked.
Check this before you order
- Check if your model uses a cable or a drive board, and the plug type on the drive.
- Count the pins and compare the shape on both ends.
- Match the drive thickness: 7 mm or 9.5 mm drives use different brackets.
- Look at the model number of the laptop to get the right cable length.

Open the base panel and the drive bay. Disconnect the battery first. Pull the plug straight out and do not twist, as the pins bend easily. Back up data if the drive is still readable.
