How to Reset Firmware Password on Apple MacBook (Pakistan Guide 2026)

You bought a used MacBook Air or MacBook Pro from OLX, from a friend abroad, or from a Hafeez Center reseller. You press power and instead of the Apple logo and setup screen you see a padlock with a password field. This is Apple's Firmware Password (on older Intel Macs) or Activation Lock / iCloud Lock (on newer T2 and Apple Silicon Macs). It sits below macOS and cannot be bypassed by reinstalling the OS, changing the SSD, or wiping the drive.

You need to hear the honest answer up front, because a lot of shops in Pakistan will lie to you about this: on modern MacBooks (2018+ with T2 security chip, and all M1, M2, M3 Apple Silicon models) there is no third-party unlock. Apple's hardware security is designed specifically to prevent this. The only legitimate way to unlock a T2 or Apple Silicon MacBook is to walk into an Apple Store with the original receipt in the name of the Apple ID that locked it, and have Apple's global service system authorise a firmware clear. In Pakistan we do not have an Apple Store, so the practical answer for these models is: you cannot unlock it here, and any shop that promises otherwise is either scamming you or planning to sell you a machine that will lock again on the next boot.

Can you do this yourself?

For older Intel MacBooks without a T2 chip (roughly 2015 and earlier Air, 2016 and earlier Pro), you can sometimes clear an EFI Firmware Password by changing the RAM configuration and resetting NVRAM, but Apple has quietly closed even this on many models. For any MacBook with a T2 chip (2018+ Intel Air, 2018+ Intel Pro) or any Apple Silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3, M4), the honest answer is no, you cannot do it yourself and no independent shop can either. Do not spend money on unlock promises for these machines.

DIY methods

NVRAM reset + RAM configuration change (very old Intel Macs only)

hard

Reality: Sometimes works on pre-2011 Intel MacBooks with removable RAM. Apple removed this loophole on nearly all machines after that. Zero on T2 and Apple Silicon.

Steps: On very old Intel MacBooks the trick was to change the amount of installed RAM (add or remove a stick) and then hold Cmd+Option+P+R at boot to reset NVRAM three times in a row. This is genuinely obsolete on modern hardware and impossible on any MacBook with soldered RAM.

Tools: Phillips 00 and Pentalobe screwdrivers, spare RAM stick, but the method is obsolete on modern Macs

SSD replacement

medium

Reality: Zero. On T2 and Apple Silicon Macs the SSD is either soldered or cryptographically bonded to the security chip. Even on older Intel Macs, a fresh SSD does not clear the firmware password because the password lives in EFI, not on storage.

Steps: Nothing to attempt. Replacing storage will not remove the firmware password on any MacBook.

Tools: None (method does not work)

Booting to Recovery or Internet Recovery

easy

Reality: Zero. The firmware password prompt appears before Recovery loads, so you cannot even reach the Recovery environment without entering it.

Steps: Nothing to attempt. If you see the firmware password lock, Recovery mode is not reachable.

Tools: None (method does not work)

Professional options in Pakistan

Apple Store service with original proof of purchase

Free (under Apple's own policy) plus your travel cost, since there is no Apple Store in Pakistan

Timeframe: Depends on travel; the unlock itself is fast once Apple verifies ownership

This is the only legitimate route for T2 and Apple Silicon MacBooks. You need the original purchase receipt in the name of the Apple ID holder, plus government ID. Nearest Apple Stores are in Dubai and Istanbul.

Genuine Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) outside Pakistan

Varies, sometimes free with proof, sometimes a service fee

Timeframe: 1-3 weeks including shipping

Same requirements as Apple Store: you must prove you are the rightful owner. Without proof, they cannot help you. Pakistan does not currently have a full AASP with firmware unlock capability.

Independent bench work on very old (pre-T2) Intel MacBooks

Rs. 6,000-15,000

Timeframe: 3-7 days

Only possible on some pre-2018 Intel MacBooks by reprogramming the EFI chip. Not possible on any T2 or Apple Silicon Mac. Success is not guaranteed even on eligible models.

What doesn't work

  • × Any Facebook, Instagram, or Daraz seller claiming to unlock a T2 or M1/M2/M3 MacBook remotely - this is impossible and always a scam
  • × iCloud unlock services that ask for payment before showing proof - almost universally scams
  • × Replacing the SSD or logic board with donor parts (parts are cryptographically bonded on modern Macs)
  • × Reinstalling macOS via USB or Internet Recovery (you cannot reach recovery with the lock active)
  • × Any tool called Checkra1n, iRemove, or similar for MacBook firmware bypass on modern hardware (these do not work on T2 or Apple Silicon Macs for firmware password removal, whatever the seller claims)

Before you buy a used Apple

This is the single most important warning on this entire page: never buy a used MacBook (any year) without doing a full cold boot in front of the seller and reaching the setup or login screen with no password prompt, no Activation Lock screen, and no Find My prompt. Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple ID in System Settings while you watch, then shut down and reboot to confirm the machine is truly clean. If the seller refuses, hesitates, or says they will remove the Apple ID later on WhatsApp, walk away. A locked T2 or Apple Silicon MacBook is essentially a paperweight in Pakistan, and no shop can genuinely unlock it. This applies to MacBooks from your cousin abroad, from Amazon returns lots, from OLX, and from resellers who imported from Dubai.

FAQ

I bought a MacBook Pro M1 from Facebook Marketplace with a lock screen. Can any shop in Lahore unlock it?

Honestly, no. Apple Silicon Macs cannot be unlocked by any third-party shop, in Pakistan or anywhere else in the world. The only legitimate route is Apple with proof of ownership. Anyone claiming otherwise is scamming you. We would strongly advise not paying anything more toward this machine.

What about a 2015 MacBook Air with an EFI Firmware Password?

That is a pre-T2 Intel Mac and some bench techs can reprogram the EFI chip on eligible models. Success is not guaranteed. Expect Rs. 6,000-12,000 and 3-7 days. Bring the machine to us at Shop 66A for a free assessment first before you commit.

Someone told me they can unlock any MacBook by soldering a new logic board. Is that true?

On modern T2 and Apple Silicon Macs the SSD, Touch ID, and other components are cryptographically bonded to the logic board. Replacing the board means replacing effectively the whole machine, and even donor boards often refuse to work without Apple's system-configuration tool. Not a real path in Pakistan.

Do you buy locked MacBooks for parts?

Sometimes, at heavily reduced prices, if the screen, chassis, and keyboard are in good condition. WhatsApp us on 0314 4000131 with photos of the lock screen, the serial number visible in the About panel if reachable, and clear pictures of the outside condition.

The seller says they can remove the iCloud lock if I send the laptop to their friend in Karachi. Should I trust that?

No. This is a common scam pattern: the seller sends the locked machine, takes payment, then either disappears or returns a still-locked machine with a fake unlock claim. Do not send additional money or the machine anywhere on that promise.
