What to check when buying a used MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max
1. Battery size and health
The Apple MacBook Pro 16" (M1 Pro/Max, 2021) shipped with a 99.6 Wh battery (Apple lists 100 Wh; footnote says actual rating 99.6 Wh). Ask for a battery report: at 80% health a 99.6 Wh pack holds about 80 Wh. Below that, budget for a replacement.
Check a battery report2. Screen
Our units have: 16.2" Liquid Retina XDR 3456x2234 mini-LED 120Hz; 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR; 16.2 inch 3456x2234 (Liquid Retina XDR). Check the resolution in display settings and look for dead pixels or pressure marks on a plain white page.
Find a matching screen3. RAM upgrade room
Our listings show a maximum of 64GB (not upgradable) Unified LPDDR5. Slots: None (soldered). If you need more RAM later, buy the unit with the free slot rather than paying extra for a pre-fitted upgrade.
Plan an upgrade4. iCloud and Activation Lock
The seller must sign out of Apple ID in front of you. If the Mac asks for a previous owner's Apple ID after a reset, walk away. Check the serial on Apple's coverage page and the battery cycle count in System Report.
