What to check when buying a used MacBook Pro 15 2018
1. Battery size and health
The Apple MacBook Pro 15" (2018) shipped with a 83.6 Wh battery (built-in 83.6 Wh). Ask for a battery report: at 80% health a 83.6 Wh pack holds about 67 Wh. Below that, budget for a replacement.
Check a battery report2. Which screen it has
Our screen research lists the MacBook Pro 15 2018 with the Apple MacBook Pro 15 (2018-2019) A1990; that 15.4″ screen came with a 2880×1800 LCD (Retina) panel. Check the resolution in display settings so you get the panel you pay for, and look for dead pixels on a white page.
See screen part numbers3. RAM upgrade room
Our listings show a maximum of 16GB (Non-upgradeable) DDR4 2400 MHz (Soldered). Slots: None (Soldered SSD). If you need more RAM later, buy the unit with the free slot rather than paying extra for a pre-fitted upgrade.
Plan an upgrade4. iCloud and Activation Lock
The seller must sign out of Apple ID in front of you. If the Mac asks for a previous owner's Apple ID after a reset, walk away. Check the serial on Apple's coverage page and the battery cycle count in System Report.
Used MacBook buying guide5. Touch or non-touch
Some of our units have a touch screen and some do not, so check the listing. Swipe every corner of the screen to make sure touch works across the whole panel.
6. Keyboard, ports and charging
Type on every key, plug a charger and a USB drive into each port, and make sure the original-wattage charger is included.
