Signs you need a new one
- The laptop does not charge or says plugged in, not charging.
- The charger gets very hot, hums or smells of burning.
- Charging stops when the cable is moved, which can be a cable or plug break.
- A warning at start-up about an unknown or low-power adapter.
- The cable is frayed, bent hard near the plug or the brick has cracked.
How to get the right fit
- Read the output on your old charger: voltage (V) and amps (A) or wattage (W).
- Match the tip size and shape, for example round barrel, rectangular, or one with a centre pin.
- For USB-C, check the wattage your laptop supports and look for PD (the fast-charge standard).
- Check the model name on the laptop in case the brand uses a special data pin.
Common questions
Can I use a charger from another brand?
Only if the voltage, tip and polarity match. Some brands also check the charger by a data pin and may limit charging if it is not original-type.
Can a bad charger damage my laptop?
Yes. A faulty adapter can send wrong voltage and harm the board or battery.
Why does my charger get warm?
Warm is normal. Too hot to hold, or a smell of burning, means you should stop using it.
