What this part does
A storage adapter lets you fit a drive in a bay or slot it was not designed for. For example, a caddy places a second drive in the optical drive bay. Other adapters change a SATA drive to M.2 or hold a 2.5 inch drive in a different tray.
Signs you need a new one
- You want to add a second drive but there is no spare slot.
- The drive caddy or tray is lost, bent or cracked.
- You have an old drive and want to use it inside a different laptop.
- The drive rattles because the bracket does not hold it firmly.
Check this before you order
- Note which adapter you need: optical bay caddy, drive tray, or M.2 converter.
- For an optical bay caddy, measure the thickness (9.5 mm or 12.7 mm).
- Check the interface of both the drive and the slot: SATA or NVMe.
- Check the connector at the end of the caddy and the pin layout.
Fitting: Easy
Most adapters are screw-in. Disconnect the battery first. Make sure the drive sits firmly, as a loose drive can lose connection and corrupt data.
