What this part does
This is the power button, and on many models a small board or flex cable behind it. Pressing it sends a signal to the motherboard to start the laptop. Some switches also include the indicator light or fingerprint reader.
Signs you need a new one
- Pressing the power button does nothing, or only works after several tries.
- The button is stuck, loose or stays pressed in.
- The laptop starts only when you press hard at one spot.
- The power light does not come on, but the charger works.
Check this before you order
- Check whether it is just the button, a small board, or a board with a cable.
- Count the pins on the plug and check the cable length.
- Look at the button position on your laptop, for example on the keyboard side or on a hinge.
- Match the model, as many boards look similar but have different pinouts.
Fitting: Moderate
The board is often under the keyboard or the palm-rest. Disconnect the battery first and keep the flex cable straight when seating the connector.

Common questions
My laptop will not start. Is it the switch?
It might be. A dead charger, drained battery or board fault can look the same. Test charging and the power light first.
Can I start the laptop without the switch?
A technician can sometimes bridge the contact, but this is a temporary workaround.
Do I need to open the whole laptop?
That depends on the model. Some have the board under a small cover, others need the upper case lifted.
