What this part does

The battery powers the laptop when the charger is not connected. It is a pack of lithium-ion cells with a small control board inside. Packs are either clipped in from outside or sit inside the base, held by screws.

Signs you need a new one

• Runtime has dropped a lot and the laptop dies within minutes.
• The percentage jumps, for example from 40 percent straight to off.
• The laptop only works while plugged in.
• The battery will not charge, or the system says plugged in, not charging.
• The base or palm-rest bulges, or the trackpad lifts. Stop using the laptop at once.

Check this before you order

• Read the battery model or part number on the label of the old battery.
• Compare voltage (V), capacity (mAh or Wh) and the cell count with the listing.
• Check the plug or connector shape and the number of wires if it is an internal pack.
• Match your laptop model exactly. Packs for sister models can look the same but differ inside.

External packs just slide out. Internal ones need the back opened. A swollen battery is a fire risk, so do not press or puncture it. Some brands check the pack with the laptop, so a non-matching pack may show a warning or limit charging.
