What this part does
The I/O board is a small side board that carries ports such as USB, audio, card reader or HDMI. It connects to the motherboard by a cable. Many laptops have one, so a port fault does not always need a new motherboard.
Signs you need a new one
- USB ports or the audio jack stop working.
- A port is loose, bent or fell inside the case.
- The card reader or HDMI port does not respond.
- Devices connect and disconnect when the cable is touched.
- Ports work only when the cable is held in a certain way.
Check this before you order
- Check the board code or part number printed on the old board.
- Count the ports on the board and compare with the listing.
- Look at the cable that connects the board, its pin count and length.
- Make sure your model has a separate board and not ports soldered on the motherboard.
Fitting: Moderate
Open the base. Disconnect the battery first. The board is usually held by one or two screws and a ribbon. Check the ports line up with the case holes before you close it.

Common questions
Is it the port or a USB driver?
Try another device and another port. If every port fails, update the driver and check the board.
Does the I/O board include the cable?
It depends. Check the listing for the cable.
Can a board be repaired?
Port replacement by soldering is possible, but a complete board is often easier.
