What this part does
Laptops use many small screws of different lengths and head types. Some hold the base, others hold the hinges, the screen or the motherboard. Using the wrong length can crack the plastic or press on parts inside.
Signs you need a new one
- Screws are missing and the base or bezel is loose.
- The screw heads are stripped and cannot be turned.
- A hinge screw has sheared and the lid is loose.
- After a repair there are screws left over or the wrong ones were used.
Check this before you order
- Note the thread size (for example M2 or M2.5) and the length in millimetres.
- Look at the head: flat, pan, or with a washer or ring.
- Check where the screw goes. Hinge screws and base screws are different.
- Check whether the listing is a model-specific set or a mixed kit.
Fitting: Easy
Use a precision screwdriver that fits well. Do not over-tighten, as plastic posts crack easily. Keep screws in a tray and mark where each size came from.
Common questions
Can I use a longer screw if I do not have the right one?
No. A longer screw can reach the board or the case and cause damage.
How can I remove a stripped screw?
A rubber band or a screw extractor can help. A technician can do it without damaging the case.
Do all laptops use the same screws?
No. Sizes vary by brand and model, and sometimes within one laptop.
