How to check laptop battery health with powercfg (Windows)

To check a Windows laptop's battery health, open Command Prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport. Windows saves an HTML report showing Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity. Divide Full Charge Capacity by Design Capacity: above 80 percent is healthy, 60 to 80 percent is worn but usable, and below 60 percent means the battery needs replacing.

What the battery report tells you

Every rechargeable laptop battery loses capacity as it ages. The powercfg battery report is built into Windows and shows two numbers that matter: Design Capacity (what the battery held when new) and Full Charge Capacity (what it holds today). The gap between them is the wear.

This is the single most important check before buying any used Windows laptop, because battery wear is invisible until you measure it. A laptop that looks perfect can still have a battery at 40 percent of its original capacity.

Reading the result

Once you have the two numbers, the maths is simple — Full Charge Capacity divided by Design Capacity, as a percentage:

  • Above 80 percent — healthy. Expect close to the laptop's rated runtime.
  • 60 to 80 percent — worn but usable. Runtime is noticeably shorter; fine if the price reflects it.
  • Below 60 percent — replace the battery soon. Treat it as a cost to factor into the purchase.

What about MacBooks?

On a MacBook, the powercfg command does not apply. Instead, hold Option and click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Power, and read the Cycle Count and Condition. macOS reports battery condition as Normal or Service Recommended. A high cycle count (many hundreds) and a Service Recommended status both point to a tired battery.

Check laptop battery health with powercfg

Generate a free Windows battery report to measure real battery wear in under two minutes.

  1. 1.

    Open Command Prompt

Press the Windows key, type cmd, and open Command Prompt. You do not need administrator rights for the battery report.

  2. 2.

    Run the report command

Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows confirms it has saved an HTML report and prints the full file path.

  3. 3.

    Open the report

Go to the path shown (usually your user folder) and open battery-report.html in any web browser.

  4. 4.

    Find the two capacity figures

In the Installed batteries section, read Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity (both in mWh).

  5. 5.

    Calculate battery health

Divide Full Charge Capacity by Design Capacity and multiply by 100. Above 80 percent is healthy; below 60 percent means replace the battery.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good battery health percentage for a used laptop?

Above 80 percent of design capacity is healthy and close to new runtime. 60 to 80 percent is worn but perfectly usable if the price reflects it. Below 60 percent means you should budget for a battery replacement soon.

Where does the powercfg battery report get saved?

By default Windows saves it as battery-report.html in your user folder (for example C:\Users\YourName). The command prints the exact path when it finishes. Open that HTML file in any browser to read the Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity figures.

Does the powercfg command harm my laptop?

No. powercfg /batteryreport only reads data Windows already collects and writes a report file. It makes no changes to your system or battery. It is completely safe to run as many times as you like.

Can I replace a worn laptop battery in Pakistan?

Yes. Most laptop batteries can be replaced with an original or a quality compatible cell. At our Hafeez Center workshop we fit health-tested replacements with a check warranty. WhatsApp 0314 4000131 with your model for a battery price.

Why does my laptop battery drain faster than when it was new?

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with age and charge cycles, so full-charge capacity drops over time. Heat accelerates this, which matters in Pakistan. Run a powercfg battery report to see the exact wear; if full-charge capacity is well below design capacity, the battery is the cause.
