Why Is My Laptop Keyboard Not Working? (Pakistan Fix Guide)

Keyboard issues fall into two categories: some keys not working (usually physical debris or a spill) versus the whole keyboard being dead (usually a driver or ribbon cable issue). The fix is very different for each, so start by identifying which one you have.

In Pakistan, chai and food-eating-while-working culture means spilled liquids are the number one cause we see at NN Laptops. If any liquid touched the keyboard, act fast, the difference between same-day action and waiting a week can be a Rs. 500 clean versus a Rs. 8,000 replacement.

Quick answer

If only some keys are dead: try the on-screen keyboard (Windows key plus Ctrl plus O) to type the same keys. If those work, the physical keyboard has debris or damage under specific keys, needs cleaning. If the whole keyboard is dead: connect a USB keyboard to test, then try Device Manager to reinstall the keyboard driver. If a USB keyboard works but the built-in still fails after driver reinstall, the ribbon cable or keyboard itself needs shop attention.

Reasons in order of likelihood

  1. 1

Liquid spill (tea, juice, water) making keys sticky or dead

The worst case. Sugary liquids especially tea, Coke, or juice leave residue under the keys that makes contacts sticky or shorts them out permanently. Even a small spill can kill 5-10 keys if not addressed within hours.

Fix: Immediate action: shut down, unplug charger and battery if possible, flip laptop upside down to drain. Do NOT turn on for 48 hours to dry. If sugar-based liquid, bring to NN Laptops within 24 hours for a proper wash. Full keyboard replacement runs Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 11,000 depending on model.
  2. 2

Debris under specific keys (crumbs, dust, hair)

Common when you eat over the laptop or use it in dusty environments. A single crumb under the spacebar can jam it. Long hair, especially from cats or women's hair, gets pulled under the keycaps by static.

Fix: Turn laptop off, flip it upside down, and tap firmly on the bottom to dislodge debris. Compressed air (Rs. 300 can at any electronics shop) blown at an angle helps. For stuck keys, gently pry the keycap off with a plastic tool, clean underneath, and snap back.
  3. 3

Keyboard driver crashed (whole keyboard dead)

Windows sometimes fails to load the keyboard driver after an update or unexpected shutdown. Every single key is dead but a USB keyboard works fine. The onscreen keyboard also works, confirming the OS is fine.

Fix: Use USB keyboard temporarily. Open Device Manager (right click Start menu), expand Keyboards, right click Standard PS/2 Keyboard or HID Keyboard, and choose Uninstall device. Restart the laptop. Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.
  4. 4

Ribbon cable loose (usually after a repair)

The keyboard connects to the motherboard via a fragile flat ribbon cable clipped into a small ZIF socket. If the laptop was recently opened for cleaning, RAM upgrade, or trackpad repair, the cable can come loose. Whole keyboard dies suddenly, USB keyboard works.

Fix: Needs the laptop opened. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500 at NN Laptops to reseat. If it happened right after another repair at the same shop, they should do it free of charge, ask them first.
  5. 5

NumLock or Filter Keys accidentally enabled

If holding Shift for 8 seconds triggered Filter Keys, or NumLock got turned on, half the keyboard behaves weirdly. Letter keys type numbers, or keys need to be held longer than normal to register. Common source of confusion.

Fix: Press NumLock once to toggle it (usually top row or Fn plus NumLk). Open Settings, Accessibility (or Ease of Access), and turn off Filter Keys, Sticky Keys, and Toggle Keys. Restart and test.
  6. 6

Language layout switched (typing wrong characters)

If pressing keys types the wrong letters (like A produces Q, or numbers produce symbols), the keyboard layout got switched, often from US English to UK English or Urdu. Accidentally triggered by Alt plus Shift or Windows key plus Space.

Fix: Press Windows key plus Space to cycle through installed language layouts. If Urdu is installed and you do not want it, remove from Settings, Time and Language, Language and Region. Keep only English (US) or English (UK).
  7. 7

Failed keyboard (bad after 5+ years of heavy use)

Chiclet keys and membrane keyboards wear out. After a million or more keystrokes (a busy user reaches this in 4-6 years), individual key domes can fail. Multiple keys dead, or keys register random extra characters.

Fix: Keyboard replacement at NN Laptops is Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 11,000 depending on model. Cheaper models like Dell Inspiron are Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 6,000, ThinkPad and MacBook keyboards are Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 11,000.

When to worry

If a spill happened and the laptop is still on, shut it down immediately. Do not turn on to test if it works, running electricity through wet circuits kills the motherboard. Bring it in within 24 hours, ideally the same day. Waiting 3+ days after a sugary spill often means a Rs. 40,000+ motherboard bill.

When to relax

Occasional missed keystrokes when typing fast, keys that need slightly more force after years of use, or a mildly sticky spacebar with no other symptoms are all normal wear. Not every quirk is a defect worth spending money on.

If it needs a repair — what it costs

Free at NN Laptops: driver reinstall, layout fix, physical inspection. Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,500: ribbon cable reseat. Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 11,000: full keyboard replacement (variable by model). Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 4,000: professional keyboard wash after spill (only worth trying within 24 hours).

FAQ

Can NN Laptops fix a keyboard after a chai spill?

Sometimes, if brought in within 24 hours. Sugar-water dries into a conductive residue. We disassemble and wash the affected area with isopropyl alcohol. Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 4,000 depending on damage extent, no guarantee if delayed.

Should I use rice to dry out a wet laptop?

No. Rice does nothing meaningful in the timeframe that matters, and pieces can get lodged in ports. Just flip it upside down, remove battery if possible, and get it to a shop.

Is it worth replacing the keyboard on an old laptop?

If the laptop is otherwise in good shape and under 6 years old, yes. Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 11,000 for a fresh keyboard on a laptop worth Rs. 40,000+ makes sense. Older laptops, consider a USB keyboard for Rs. 800 to Rs. 3,000 instead.

My arrow keys work but WASD does not, why?

You likely have Gaming mode or Windows Lock enabled (some gaming laptops), or a stuck Fn key. Check for a Fn Lock LED, and press Fn plus Esc to toggle it.

Do you have spare keyboards for older ThinkPad models?

Usually yes for T400 series onward, and most Dell Latitude 5000/7000. Some very old models like T61 or old Vaios may need to be ordered. WhatsApp us your model number for stock check.
