Lenovo ThinkPad T480 SSD Upgrade Guide (Pakistan)
If your ThinkPad T480 still boots off its original hard drive or a small SATA SSD, an NVMe upgrade is the most noticeable speed change you can make to it — boot times drop from 30-40 seconds to under 10, and app launches feel instant. The T480 has a dedicated M.2 2280 slot wired for PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, and many units also carry a spare 2.5" SATA bay, so you can run two drives at once instead of choosing between capacity and speed.
This guide covers exactly which SSD form factor and interface the T480 accepts, what a 2026 NVMe upgrade costs in Pakistan (SSD prices have also risen alongside the RAM shortage), and how to physically swap or add a drive without losing your existing Windows install. We're N.N Laptops, Hafeez Center, Lahore — we handle T480 SSD swaps and clean OS migrations in-shop.
Max RAM
32GB DDR4-2400 (2× 16GB SO-DIMM, dual-channel) — see our dedicated T480 RAM guide
Max storage
Up to 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe in the primary slot, plus an optional 2.5" SATA bay (up to 2TB) on non-fingerprint/smart-card chassis variants — up to ~4TB combined across both bays
Compatible RAM
DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM, 260-pin, 1.2V (2 slots, 32GB max)
Compatible SSD
M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe for the primary slot (Gen4 drives fit and work but run capped at Gen3 speed — buying a cheaper Gen3-rated drive is the better value here); 2.5" SATA III SSD for the secondary bay where fitted
Upgrade cost in Pakistan
- ram
- DDR4 SO-DIMM: 8GB ~Rs 14,000-16,000 · 16GB ~Rs 18,000-32,000 · 32GB single module ~Rs 34,299 (2026 DRAM-shortage pricing — up sharply from 2025 levels; confirm today's price on WhatsApp before ordering).
- ssd
- NVMe M.2 1TB: ~Rs 37,000-56,000 (Gen3 cheaper end, Gen4 higher-speed end) · 2.5" SATA 1TB: ~Rs 25,000-33,000 — both up due to the parallel 2026 NAND shortage.
Step-by-step procedure
- 1
Decide: replace or add a second drive
If your T480 only has the M.2 slot filled, you can add a 2.5" SATA SSD in the spare bay for extra storage without touching your existing install. If you're replacing the primary M.2 drive, you'll need to clone or reinstall Windows.
- 2
Buy an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 NVMe SSD (or a 2.5" SATA drive for the second bay)
A Gen3-rated drive is the cost-efficient choice since the T480's slot caps speed at Gen3 anyway. WhatsApp 0314 4000131 to confirm today's stock and price.
Confirm 'M.2 2280' and 'NVMe' on the listing — an M.2 SATA drive looks identical but is electrically different and some (not all) T480 boards won't recognise it in the NVMe slot. - 3
Clone your existing drive (if replacing, not adding)
Use free cloning software (e.g. Macrium Reflect Free) to clone your current Windows install onto the new NVMe drive before removing the old one — this avoids a full OS reinstall.
Back up anything irreplaceable separately first — cloning software can fail on a drive with bad sectors. - 4
Power off, unplug, and ground yourself
Shut down fully, unplug the charger, remove the battery if accessible, and touch an unpainted metal surface before opening the chassis to discharge static.
- 5
Remove the bottom panel and locate the M.2 slot / SATA bay
Undo the captive base screws and lift the panel from the hinge end. The M.2 NVMe slot and the optional 2.5" bay are both accessible from the bottom without further disassembly on most T480 units.
- 6
Install the drive and secure the retention screw
Insert the M.2 drive at a slight angle into the slot, press it flat, and secure it with the small retention screw so it doesn't flex loose. For the 2.5" bay, slide the drive into its caddy and reconnect the SATA cable.
The M.2 retention screw is tiny — don't lose it, and don't overtighten. - 7
Reassemble, boot, and verify in Disk Management
Close the panel, reconnect power, and boot. Open Disk Management (Win+X → Disk Management) to confirm the new drive is detected at its full capacity, then set it as boot drive in BIOS if you cloned to it.
FAQ
Does the ThinkPad T480 support NVMe SSDs?
Yes — the M.2 2280 slot is wired for PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, not just SATA. NVMe drives are dramatically faster than the SATA or HDD most T480 units originally shipped with.
Can I run two drives at once in a T480?
Many T480 configurations (particularly ones without a fingerprint reader or smart-card reader) have a spare 2.5" SATA bay in addition to the M.2 slot, letting you run an NVMe boot drive plus a second SATA drive for bulk storage. Check your specific unit — some SKUs use that space for other components.
How much does a 1TB NVMe SSD cost in Pakistan right now?
Roughly Rs 37,000-56,000 depending on brand and Gen3 vs Gen4 rating, as of 2026 — SSD prices have risen alongside the parallel NAND shortage affecting RAM. WhatsApp 0314 4000131 for today's confirmed price.
Will I lose Windows and my files by upgrading the SSD?
Not if you clone your existing drive to the new one before removing it — this preserves your OS, apps, and files exactly as they are. If you're adding a second drive rather than replacing the first, your existing install isn't touched at all.
Can NN Laptops do the SSD swap and cloning for me?
Yes — bring your T480 to Shop 66A, 3rd Floor, Hafeez Center, Gulberg III, Lahore. We supply the drive, clone your existing Windows install, and install it while you wait. Message 0314 4000131 to confirm stock first.
