Lenovo ThinkPad T480 RAM Upgrade Guide (Pakistan)

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480 is one of the most common secondhand business laptops in Pakistan, and it's also one of the easiest to upgrade — it has two accessible DDR4 SO-DIMM slots on the underside of the chassis, officially rated to a 32GB maximum (16GB + 16GB, dual-channel). If yours still ships with the original 4GB or 8GB module, a RAM upgrade is the single highest-value thing you can do to this laptop.

This guide covers exactly what module to buy, what the upgrade costs in Pakistan right now (RAM prices are elevated industry-wide in 2026 — see why below), and how to install it yourself in about 15 minutes with a single Phillips screwdriver. We're N.N Laptops, Hafeez Center, Lahore — we fit T480 RAM upgrades in-shop every week and stock DDR4 SO-DIMMs if you'd rather not open the laptop yourself.

Max RAM

32GB DDR4-2400 (2× 16GB SO-DIMM, dual-channel — official Lenovo maximum)

Max storage

Up to 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, plus an optional 2.5" SATA bay on non-fingerprint/smart-card chassis variants

Compatible RAM

DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM, 260-pin, 1.2V — Kingston, Samsung, and Crucial modules all confirmed working; buy a matched pair (e.g. 16GB+16GB) for dual-channel performance rather than one large stick

Compatible SSD

M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe (a Gen4 drive will physically fit and work but runs capped at Gen3 speed) — also accepts SATA M.2 or a 2.5" SATA drive in the secondary bay where present

Upgrade cost in Pakistan

ram
DDR4 SO-DIMM: 8GB ~Rs 14,000-16,000 · 16GB ~Rs 18,000-32,000 · 32GB single module ~Rs 34,299 (2026 DRAM-shortage pricing — up sharply from 2025 levels; confirm today's price on WhatsApp before ordering).
ssd
NVMe M.2 1TB: ~Rs 37,000-56,000 (Gen3 cheaper end, Gen4 higher-speed end) · 2.5" SATA 1TB: ~Rs 25,000-33,000 — both up due to the parallel 2026 NAND shortage.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. 1

Confirm your current RAM and slot usage

Open Task Manager → Performance → Memory on Windows and check 'Slots used' — the T480 has 2 slots. If it shows '1 of 2', you have a free slot and can simply add a second stick rather than replace anything.

  2. 2

    Buy a matched DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM

For dual-channel performance, match the capacity of your existing stick (e.g. add another 8GB to an existing 8GB) or replace both with a matched pair. WhatsApp 0314 4000131 to confirm today's stock price before ordering.

Do not mix a DDR4 stick with anything DDR5-labelled — they are physically different and won't fit.
  3. 3

Power off, unplug, and remove the battery connector if accessible

Shut the laptop down fully (not sleep), unplug the charger, and if your T480 has a removable battery, take it out. This prevents any accidental short while the board is exposed.

  4. 4

    Remove the bottom panel

Undo the captive screws on the base (they stay attached to the panel) and gently lift the cover from the hinge end. The RAM slots sit under a small shielded compartment near the front-left of the board on most T480 units.

Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface first — static discharge can silently damage RAM or the motherboard.
  5. 5

Seat the SO-DIMM at 45 degrees, then press flat

Align the notch on the module with the key in the slot, insert at roughly 45°, and push down firmly until the side clips click into the notches on the module.

If the clips don't click on their own, the module isn't fully seated — never force the panel closed over an unseated stick.
  6. 6

    Reassemble and boot

Replace the battery connector, close the bottom panel, reconnect power, and boot normally. First boot after a RAM change can take a few seconds longer than usual — that's normal.

  7. 7

Verify the new total in Windows

Settings → System → About → 'Installed RAM' should show your new total. If it's lower than expected, power off and reseat the module — it likely isn't fully clicked in.

FAQ

Can the ThinkPad T480 really take 32GB of RAM?

Yes — it has two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and Lenovo officially rates the T480 for a 32GB maximum (2× 16GB, dual-channel). This is one of the reasons the T480 still holds resale value years after release.

Do I need to replace both RAM sticks or can I just add one?

If you have a free slot, you can add a single stick. For best performance, though, dual-channel (two matched sticks) is noticeably faster than one large single stick — if you're buying new RAM anyway, buy a matched pair.

How much does a T480 RAM upgrade cost at NN Laptops in 2026?

A single DDR4 16GB SO-DIMM currently runs roughly Rs 18,000-32,000 due to the 2026 global DRAM shortage — prices are genuinely higher than they were in 2025. WhatsApp 0314 4000131 for today's confirmed price and stock.

Will upgrading RAM void my T480's warranty?

No — Lenovo explicitly designed the T480's RAM and storage as end-user-serviceable, with a dedicated access panel. Opening the RAM compartment specifically does not void the system warranty (unlike opening the main chassis on newer soldered ultrabooks).

Can NN Laptops install the RAM for me?

Yes — bring your T480 to Shop 66A, 3rd Floor, Hafeez Center, Gulberg III, Lahore, and we'll confirm your current config, supply a matched DDR4 SO-DIMM, and install it while you wait. Message 0314 4000131 first to confirm stock.
